Raila lobbies in Maputo as he intensifies Southern Africa AUC Chair campaigns

Kenya's candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson race, Raila Odinga, spent Friday in Maputo, Mozambique, where he lobbied the newly inaugurated government of President Daniel Chapo.
Chapo, who was sworn in this week during a low-key ceremony in the capital, faced an opposition boycott following highly disputed elections.

During his visit, Raila met with President Chapo and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to present his vision.
"Thank you Mr. President for the opportunity to share with you my vision for Africa and my quest to be the AUC Chairperson. Obrigado!" the veteran Kenyan politician posted on his X account.
Raila, currently on a long-range Southern African tour, also visited Maseru, Lesotho, where he met with Prime Minister Sam Matekane to garner support for his bid.
His tour has included stops in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana, where he continued to lobby for his candidacy.
Next, Raila is set to engage with President Lazarus Chakwera in Malawi as part of his ongoing efforts to secure support.
The AU leaders will vote for a new AUC chairperson during the upcoming AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February.
Raila is competing against candidates from Madagascar and Djibouti for the position. The region is historically known for its consensus-building approach during pivotal AU votes.
